Choose Your Clients Wisely
Do you know how to pick the ideal client or where to draw the line? Sometimes no matter how incredible they are you still have to say, “no.”
You might turn work down because your team lacks capacity, you have a conflict of interest, you're not that interested in the project, or you're no longer offering that service. At Pony Friday, we do a lot of things and we do a lot of things really well, and like we tell our clients, to be great you have to focus.
You can't be great at everything.
We consider ourselves creative branding experts and masters, but as we expanded into an inspirational lifestyle brand we started to have to juggle things more frequently. You've all heard that old figure of speach about spreading yourself too thin:
"Jack of all trades, master of none."
Make no mistake, the world needs plenty of Jacks and Janes to help with a wide variety of tasks. You just don't want to be half Jack and half master, because they'll lump you in with the Jacks.
Take a look at your brand in the mirror.
You need to decide who you are as a company today and who you want to be tomorrow, then start working toward it. We're currently transitioning from being a creative branding boutique and inspirational lifestyle brand to an inspirational lifestyle brand that does a whole lot of fun creative branding for ourselves.
Our best client is Pony Friday.
Helping our clients do incredible work and make their client experience better is good fun and we'll continue doing it for our legacy clients as long as we can. It's simply that our bandwidth is maxed out and we have to choose who stays and who goes. We chose ourselves for the top priority, which might seem obvious but there's a reason for this other figure of speech:
"The shoemaker's children go barefoot."
We're growing in one consistent direction.
Our studio blog consistently drops on Tuesday, it has for 16 months and yesterday it didn't. Not living up to our own expectations triggers a need to evaluated what we have time for and what we don't. The good news is that we have time for our blogs and will continue posting back on Tuesday starting next week. However, there will be a slight shift in content. From now on we'll be talking more about us and what we're up to instead of giving marketing and branding tips. All those tips are good advice. Now we'll talk about how we're employing those tips instead of what you should consider doing.
Our advice to you this week:
- Put yourself first.
- Put your brand first.
- Put you first.
Until next week, spend a bit of time assessing where your time is going and if you're spending it on something that will help you tomorrow or only today.
