Feeling Like a Fraud is Normal
Mirror, mirror on the wall…
Do you ever feel like your life is a little too good?
Like maybe you don’t deserve to be where you are?
That’s “imposter syndrome.” It’s when, for whatever reason, you feel like you snuck into our professional achievements and at any second, someone could leap out, laughing and pointing and shouting, “you thought you could do this? As if!”
That’s crazy talk and you know it.
You’re not some tumbleweed blowing all haphazardly wherever the breeze takes you. You didn’t get where you are by accident. You earned it. Your sweaty brow and creative calluses are proof. It might not feel like it sometimes, but that’s just because it’s so crazy awesome to be doing what you love and facing new challenges on the regular.
Wherever you are right now, remember you belong—because you earned it through hard work. You got you here!
But… What if you have to staple a smile on in the morning so nobody at the office realizes you’re not feeling it anymore?
What if you really are an imposter?
If you’ve been fakin’ it with no real intention of ever makin’ it anywhere except to next weekend, it’s probably time to check yourself. Maybe what you thought you wanted to do with your life has grown stale because you didn’t update it. Maybe you’ve changed. Maybe the things that were important to you five years ago don’t matter like they used to.
Tweak, shift, adjust and evolve!
People and ponies change. Sometimes we change a lot faster than the people around us. That’s okay as long as we eventually realize it and do something. That’s when we get to take stock. There might be something amazing in your future that you haven’t been able to see while you’re busy living the old you’s dreams.
If that means big change is coming, roll up your sleeves and prepare to be bold. It’s going to be crazy awesome to do what you love and face new challenges on the regular.
Remind yourself of how much work you put in to get to here and how far you’ve come. Soak it up!
