Going with the flow and doing what everyone else is doing is likely not your thing, otherwise you probably wouldn’t be reading our blog. You aren’t here to blend in and neither is your business.
If you’ve ever tried to swim against a current or do want nobody else thought was the right thing to do, then you understand how tough it can be to go your own way. When you decide not to be one with the herd, you’re making a conscious choice to go to battle every day and maybe even become unpopular. That lapse in popularity is often only momentary and in that moment it can feel very isolating. You’re no longer colouring inside the lines, which makes everyone around you a bit uncomfortable.
As a business it’s great to step into new territory and a bit of backlash from a shift in brand positioning can be very powerful. People notice change; it’s what you do with that attention that matters. How you react to their unease will make the difference between continuing to evolve your company and sliding back to where your customers were accustom to you being. Remember Darwin’s Theory of Evolution?
Fighting the pull to do everything like the masses will always be exhausting, but the rewards can be more than worth it. Dare to be different.
