Social Media Strategy = You Do You!
According to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest and those other social platforms... you need to be there or you're missing out. Yes, your business is “supposed” to be on social media, but what the heck are you going to do once you’re all signed up to tweet, blog, snap, pin and insta-whatever?
Stop Looking for an Algorithm to Social Success
Get ready to hear this. Deep breath. There’s no perfect number of posts, graphics and photos you can push out at a precisely calculated time of day that will guarantee your audience will come running. This knowledge won't set you free, but it should give you permission to ignore the truck loads of advice you're receiving at every turn from the internet gurus. The one thing that will be key to your presence on any social media platform is to authentically, consistently be you. How down-to-earth is that? Easy peasy!
Figuring Out Who You are is Hard Work
It’s easy for some blog writer to say, “just go do you” and dust their hands of that topic and move on. Unfortunately, knowing exactly what that means is a little tougher. Doing “you” is all about your brand. Have you developed a brand you’re crazy in love with? That’s more than important, it's necessary.
Create Your Own Unique Content
Having a strong brand will guide the way you developing your voice and style when it comes to social media—and every decision you make with your marketing. For example, what does a tweet from your business account sound like? In a perfect world, every tweet you send will sound unmistakably like you and your followers will come to expect this and new fans will follow you because of it.
Likewise for what you post on visual platforms like Instagram and Pinterest. The imagery will look and feel uniquely you and the captions and hashtags will, too.
Pro tip 1: Ensure your website has the same look and feel as all your social platforms or you might as well put salt in the sugar bowl and serve it to your customers for all the good it’s doing you.
Authenticity is More Than a Buzzword
Finding your voice may take some time and likely won’t come easy. You can start to figure it out by being distinctly you in your social media posting. That means not worrying about perfection so much as keeping it real.
Don't Copy Your Idols
You may have social media idols and you should certainly use them for reference, but you shouldn't mimic their style to build your own success. Instead, be real and on brand when you put your messages out into the world. Trial and error is part of figuring it out. #nofilter
Pro tip 2: Reposting content from other sources is a good way to get ignored. Do you want to be ignored? We didn’t think so.
Be Consistent or Risk Confusing Your People
If you’re using more than one social media platform, ask yourself if they all look and feel like they’re coming from the same place. Aim for cross-platform consistency so your fans know what to expect. That includes consistency in your usernames and handles, imagery, and frequency of posting, plus consistently posting only what meets your standards of high quality content.
Pace Yourself and Focus Your Attention
You don’t have to be everywhere. In fact, you shouldn't be everywhere. Signing up for and trying to be active on every social media platform is comparable to shooting yourself in the foot or the less painful analogy; spreading yourself too thin.
Do some research to figure out the ideal places to represent your business based on where your market is hanging out, what you’re good at and what you like to do. Remember the social part of social media; be your bold self and have fun.
