Bryan Williams: Make Fun a Habit
We sat down with Bryan Williams, Creative Technologist at The LEGO Group during CAMP Festival 2017 to hear more about how he and his family live and get any advice he had to share with his fellow creatives. Read on:
“Sacrifice with purpose is not a sacrifice.” —Bryan Williams
Bryan Williams and his wife are all about living life by design when it comes to their family and their work. For example, they wanted a life that allowed them flexibility in scheduling and to be able to take advantage of travel—a life where they could capitalize on opportunities, no matter when they cropped up. With that in mind, they decided to homeschool their children. Bryan’s wife is a former teacher, so they knew she would do an impeccable job of educating their kids. Of course, the principle of designing the life you want is applicable beyond the K-12 curriculum.
Consider your VIPs.
Family is at the core of Bryan’s business decisions. He makes sure his wife and children know the purpose and value of his work endeavours. For example, when he goes away to talk somewhere like the CAMP Festival, he’s sure to get total buy-in from the family. Being on the same page as his partner is key. It’s all about making joint decisions so everyone feels involved.
His work represents who he is.
Bryan says he feels his life is balanced because he makes the time to both do what he wants to do and what he needs to do. The hours are long but he finds them rewarding. “Find passionate people and let it rub off on you,” Bryan says. It’s easy to get sucked into processes at big companies. So go out and absorb passion from others on the regular. That can mean seeking out customers who are passionate, too.
Fun won’t find you.
Finding work you truly like doing is essential. When you can find that appreciation, the long hours will feel less like a sacrifice and more like finding your purpose. Bryan is a major advocate of finding enjoyment in life.
